Widow Skimmers - Female and Male
Such a stunningly beautiful dragonfly - the female widow skimmer (Libellula luctuosa). The colour in her eyes was so pretty, I wish the focus on her eyes in the first scene was a little crisper. I have read that eight spotted skimmers (ruclips.net/video/BvyLC9dgAXk/видео.html) can be territorial and I believe those are what are dive bombing around her in the first scene.
Widow skimmers have a home range across the United States and southern Ontario and Quebec (except in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains).
At the end, a male swooped in to take the female's pot on the branch. I wasn't expecting this and the camerawork is shaky as I tried to film a scene of him. It was all I got and...

Eight-Spotted Skimmer
Просмотров 389 часов назад
The eight spotted skimmer (Libellula forensis) is found west of the Rocky Mountains in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. They are a percher rather than a flier. Fliers fly around to capture their prey, while perchers rest on perches much in the way flycatching birds do. I found it interesting to see how they fold back their front legs to around their necks (do they have technically...
Common Murres | Yaquina Head, Oregon
Просмотров 13114 дней назад
The Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area near Newport, Oregon can host more than 50,000 common murres (Uria aalge), who breed along the rocky cliffs and islands surrounding the lighthouse. Common murres gather and nest in very dense colonies called loomeries. They do not make nests, but rather lay their eggs on the bare rock or ground. They will sometimes arrange pebbles around the egg, which ...
Pigeon Guillemots Calling (Breeding Plumage, Red Legs)
Просмотров 18914 дней назад
Pigeon guillemots (Cepphus columba) during breeding season along the Oregon coast. A member of the auk family, they range across the North Pacific, from the Kamchatka Peninsula in Siberia to the western coast of North America, from Alaska to California. They breed and burrow on rocky islands, coastlines, and cliffs to provide protection from predators. In the winter, their plumage is a lighter ...
Osprey Calling with Their Chicks
Просмотров 32028 дней назад
Two osprey (Pandion haliaetus) nests in the lower mainland of British Columbia. If I could be so bold as to translate the calls, I think the message is "we're hungry here, are you delivering a fish for us soon??" I was impressed by how the chicks kept their nest clean! I couldn't find any information on whether this was a behaviour taught by the parents. Osprey are piscivores, with 99% of their...
White Crowned Sparrow Singing
Просмотров 171Месяц назад
The beautiful song of the white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys). White crowned sparrows can sing up to 15 times a minute and have different song dialects in different regions! The young learn their songs from more than just their parents, so slight variations get copied until all the birds in a territory are singing the new version of the song. Bill colour varies by region also. Birds ...
Ash Throated Flycatcher Calling ~ Crooked River Gorge, Oregon ~ Cottontail Rabbit, Fence Lizard
Просмотров 107Месяц назад
0:00 Ash-throated flycatcher. Ash-throated flycatchers (Myiarchus cinerascens) are a medium sized tyrant flycatcher, inhabiting dry landscapes from the western states all the way down to Central America. Being well adapted to dry conditions, the ash-throated flycatcher does not need to drink water and gets all the hydration it needs from the food it eats. They are primarily insectivores, but th...

Great Horned Owl Preening

As a follow up to my video of the three great horned owlets (see link below, or at the end of the video), here is what I presume was the mama owl, hanging out over on the other side of the same tree. What an amazing opportunity I had to observe the mama and the three fledgling chicks for well over an hour and a half! Great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) are crepuscular, preferring to hunt at du...

House Finches Singing

The song of the house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus). House finches are, historically, a bird of western North America. However, in the 1940's, they were introduced into New York City through the illegal bird trade. Release of those birds led to an expanding eastern population that has now merged with the its original territory in the west. There are an estimated 40 million house finches in North...
